WHY: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 12.5 million children and youth ages 2 to 19 years are obese or overweight, increasing their risk for other health problems, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer. Since 1980, obesity in this same age group has tripled. In addition, the data also reveals significant racial and ethnic disparities, with Hispanic boys and non-Hispanic African-American girls significantly more likely to be obese than their youthful counterparts. In response to these alarming trends, Jam!boree Day provides a day of fun in the park that focuses on developing healthy habits and fitness as beneficial components in the lives of its Northern California residents.
Jamboree has been selected by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports as a Spotlight Award nominee. This award honors individuals, organizations and events that positively impact the physical activity and fitness levels of California’s children and youth. If selected as a 2011 winner, the 2012 Jam!boree Day will be underwritten by the Council.
